J. Phillip Thompson is Professor of Urban Planning and Politics at MIT. From 2017 to 2021, he was Deputy Mayor of New York for Strategic Policy Initiatives. He currently is also a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress and a Senior Advisor to PolicyLink.

Thompson specializes in the politics of labor and community organizations, race and urban politics, and in the political economy of community development.

Before entering academia, Phil worked as Housing Coordinator for NYC Mayor David Dinkins and as Deputy General Manager for Operations and Development of the New York City Housing Authority.
